How do botanists know which genera and families certain species belong in? Looking at morphology, or the shape and structure of plants, is a good way to start! Both of these plants, Campsis radicans on the left and Tacoma stans on the right are in the family Bignoniaceae. Both species have flowers with 5 fused petals that form a tube, with the petals on the bottom being larger than the ones on the top. Recognizing these similarities and patterns is very important in plant identification.
